Tour de Aky cyclists go the extra mile in memory of PC

The organiser of the annual Tour de Aky has thanked volunteers, supporters and the cyclists taking part for making it a huge success.

The charity cycle ride was the final event in this year’s fundraising in memory of North Yorkshire Police dog handler, PC Mick ‘Aky’ Atkinson.

PC Pierre Olesqui launched the Tour de Aky in 2018 following Aky’s death by suicide to inspire officers and staff to get out in the open air and talk about their feelings and issues.

Around 45 riders completed the route and Pierre said that keeping that many cyclists safe on public roads required a big team effort.

A team of volunteers gave up their own time vehicles to provide refreshments and supplies, while updates were coordinated via a group chat to ensure anyone needing assistance received it quickly.

Among those volunteering was PC Ashley Aitkins, owner of Crank Works, who took annual leave to provide mechanical support throughout the day.

Pierre said: “We had eight or nine people who again give up their own time, used their own petrol with supplies in their cars who drove the route or follow behind a group or a peloton.

“That's what stands out for me every year, the number of people who give up their own time to make the event happen.

“It's fantastic to remember Aky and raise money for charity, but our volunteers make the day possible.”

The 106-mile course started and finished at the Two Pointers pub in Woodlesford and included a stop at the Leathley Farm Shop.

Pierre said: “The farm shop has been really supportive over the past few years, and we had really good hospitality at the Two Pointers.

“A massive thank you to our sponsors with Reigl UK seeing us off, CB Yacht Guardianage supporting with water and supplies and Irwin Mitchell riding with us.

“They make the shirts happen but for them to be part of the day was really special.”
