Remembering Sergeant David Winter

28 June 2026

North Yorkshire Police Federation will today remember Sergeant David Winter, who was murdered on this day in 1982.

Sergeant Winter was shot dead in Old Malton on 28 June after confronting a suspect during a manhunt for the killer of his colleague, PC David Ian Haigh, who was murdered 11 days earlier.

The suspect drew a gun and fired at Sergeant Winter and then pursued him as the officer tried to escape, shooting him three times, twice in the head and one from point blank range.

Branch chair Rob Bowles said: “Today we remember Sergeant Winter on this sad day.

“He was a brave and dedicated officer who represented the very best of policing.

“He made the ultimate sacrifice in trying to protect the public and get justice for his colleague."
