North Yorkshire Police Federation has paid tribute to ‘the best of us’ Police Constable Rosie Prior, who tragically died while on duty after being hit by a lorry on Saturday (11 January 2025).
Rosie was helping at the scene of another crash when the incident took place. She was standing on the verge of the A19 at Bagby, when she and two others were hit by a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) just before 9am.
Rosie and Ryan Welford, 41, of Knaresborough, who was involved in the first collision, both died at the scene. A teenage boy, who was a passenger in Ryan’s car, was also hit and remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The chair of North Yorkshire Police Federation Rob Bowles said: “Rosie was the best of British policing. On Saturday, she demonstrated that when she stopped to assist a member of the public.
“Throughout Rosie’s career, she truly exemplified public service and was a credit to North Yorkshire Police.
“She will be missed by everyone who knew and worked with her. Our heartfelt thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues at this extremely sad time.”
Her family has described Rosie as a ‘loving mum, wife, daughter, sister and aunty’ who ‘will be deeply missed’.
Rob added: “Additionally, I’d like to thank all those officers and staff who worked tirelessly over the weekend responding to the incident - especially those who attended the collision.
“I’d also like to send our thoughts to the family and loved ones of Ryan, as well as the teenager involved in the accident.
“Please remember, the Federation is here for all those who have been affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.”
