Special Constable is remembered

7 June 2025

Today marks the anniversary of the death of a North Yorkshire Special Constable posthumously awarded the Queen’s Commendation.

Glenn Goodman, 37, was fatally wounded on 7 June 1992 when he was shot without warning as he and a colleague on mobile patrol were questioning two men in a car they had stopped in a routine check on the A64 near Tadcaster in the early hours. The second officer was also shot but survived.

Rob Bowles, chair of North Yorkshire Police Federation, said: “This shocking incident serves as a reminder of the risks and dangers police personnel face on a daily basis as they go about their duties. The fact that Glenn was a member of the Special Constabulary and was therefore giving up his own time to volunteer and support the Force in serving and protecting the people of North Yorkshire just made his death even more heartbreaking.

“Today we remember Glenn and the loved ones he left behind.”
