PC shot tackling murder suspect is remembered

28 June 2025

North Yorkshire Sergeant David Winter died on this day in 1982.

Sergeant Winter was 31 when he was shot dead in Old Malton on 28 June after confronting a suspect during a manhunt for the killer of his colleague, PC David Ian Haigh, 11 days earlier.

The suspect drew a gun and fired at Sergeant Winter and then pursued him as the officer tried to escape, shooting him three times, twice in the head and one from point blank range.

“The fact that the Force lost two officers in such a short timeframe is still shocking, despite the passage of time,” said Rob Bowles, chair of North Yorkshire Police Federation.

“Our thoughts today are with the loved ones he left behind and his former colleagues as well as the service he gave to the Force and the communities we serve.”
