North Yorkshire Police Federation

Federation elections: put yourself forward as a rep

23 January 2025

It is now more than two weeks since the Federation’s elections process was launched, and the first stage is drawing to a close.

Members were invited to put themselves forward as workplace Federation representatives when the nomination period opened on 30 December.

But this part of the elections is now drawing to a close as nominations have to be received by Friday (24 January).

“Now is the time for anyone wanting to put themselves forward as a Federation rep to act – either by submitting their nomination or by taking steps to find out more about the role,” says Rob Bowles, chair of the North Yorkshire Police Federation.

Elections

“Anyone who is still unsure can contact the Federation office to find out more or simply speak to one of our existing reps who will be able to give an insight into what being a rep entails.

“Even if a member decides not to put themselves forward, I would urge them to get involved with the elections process by voting – first for the workplace reps, then for the local chair and, in the summer, for the national chair.

“We need the membership to engage with the elections and help shape the future of the Federation locally, regionally and nationally.”

The Force’s constables, sergeants and inspecting ranks, as well as Specials, can stand in the local workplace representative elections, with successful candidates being given the opportunity to represent, support and negotiate on key issues for their colleagues.

The Federation is making a special plea to members from under-represented groups to consider putting themselves forward to become reps to help better reflect the diversity of the membership.

Self-nominate

Information, including how to self-nominate, has been emailed to all members.

Voting, via an electronic system, is open between 3 and 23 February and the results will be announced on 27 February.

Successful local candidates automatically become part of the North Yorkshire Branch Council. From the Branch Council, an executive - the Branch Board - is elected, including a chair, secretary and treasurer.

Federation members vote for their local chair from mid-May with the results being announced on 28 June. The branch chair and other officials take office on 1 June.

Voting for the national chair, which is open to all members of the Police Federation nationwide, runs from 30 June to 14 July with the results being announced on 15 July.

The elections draw to a close on 1 October when members of the new National Board take up their positions.
