Access to a range of sports clubs for the price of a 'posh coffee'

Have you considered becoming a member of North Yorkshire Police Sport UK? At less than £6 every month, it costs the same as a posh coffee, and you get access to a range of sports clubs.

With June being Men's Health Month - an annual awareness campaign shining a light on men's physical and mental health - we caught up with David Edwards to discuss the many benefits that come with playing sport.

Dave, who is the secretary of North Yorkshire Police Sport UK (NYP PSUK), said: “There are so many sports teams calling your name - whatever your level of ability, everyone is welcome.

“They’re more than just sport teams - they are a readily available support network, a group of friends and like-minded colleagues who understand the pressures of policing. These sports teams give you an opportunity to forge new connections too, which can be beneficial from a work point of view.

“In my opinion, sport is the best medicine.

“I’d urge everyone to consider becoming a member. It’s less than £6 per month, but the benefits you get from joining are priceless.”

David, who is a member of the golf team, says: “Playing golf is a great distraction from everyday issues.

“When you’re on the golf course, it’s all you think about. There was a point where my wife had received a cancer diagnosis and my dad was terminally - and it was being part of the Force’s golf team that stopped me from going mad.

“Playing sport stopped me from spiralling myself. Golf and exercise helped me deal will life’s challenges.”

Health benefits

In addition to the many health benefits David has experienced, he has also had the opportunity to play on some of the UK’s most prestigious golf courses.

“For that time, you’re away from the job, you’re away from the Force, and you can just forget anything that worries or concerns you,” said Dave.

He ended: “I would love to see us recruit more members. Please do get in touch if you’re interested. All abilities, all ages welcome - and remember, we understand the time constraints that come with policing, which is why our clubs are flexible to suit their members.”

Serving police officers and Specials can become a member of NYP PSUK, with membership costing just £5.25 / month (price correct in May 2025). This money is tax-free and deducted from payroll.

All members receive access to all of the above sports activities.
