Allowances, Travel and Expenses

Free Arriva Travel

With effect from 1st November 2015 the Chief Constable has directed that the terms of any previous informal agreement with ARRIVA Wales (buses and Trains) be revised. As of this date, free travel on Arriva Buses and Trains is only available to both police officers and police community support officers whilst on duty only.

Police Officers - applies both in uniform and plain clothes; the officer must be on duty at the time and undertaking the journey in connection with a policing purpose. Officers are expressly prohibited from seeking to obtain; or accepting any form of free travel concession whilst off duty (including any commute to/from home to a place of work or other location).

 

Hardship Allowance

  1. A member of a police force shall be paid an allowance of £30, to be known as the hardship allowance, in the circumstances set out in sub-paragraph (b).
  2. The allowance shall be paid in respect of every night when the member:
    1. is held in reserve, within the meaning of paragraph (11), and
    2. is not provided with proper accommodation.
  3. For the purposes of sub-paragraph (b)(ii) “proper accommodation” means a room for the sole occupation of the member, with an en suite bathroom

 

Overnight Allowance

  1. A member of a police force in the rank of constable, sergeant, inspector or chief inspector shall be paid an allowance of £50, to be known as the away from home overnight allowance, in respect of every night on which the member is held in reserve.
  2. Subject to sub-paragraph (c), a member is held in reserve for the purposes of this paragraph if the member is serving away from his normal place of duty (whether because the member has been provided for the assistance of another police force under section 24 of the Police Act 1996 or otherwise) and is required to stay in a particular, specified place rather than being allowed to return home.
  3. A member is not held in reserve if the member is serving away from his normal place of duty only by reason of being on a training course or carrying out routine enquiries.

 

Training Course Expenses

At the Police Negotiating Board meeting on 9 February, 2005 it was agreed that the incidental expenses allowance for those attending residential training courses should be frozen at its current level of £4.43 per night. The maximum allowance is £17.72 per week except where an Officer has to attend for a week’s course of training on the preceding Sunday night and will thus be in attendance for five nights (£22.15).

Unsocial Hours Allowance

  1. A member of a police force in the rank of constable, sergeant, inspector or chief inspector shall be paid an allowance, to be known as the unsocial hours allowance, in respect of every full hour worked by the member between 8pm and 6am.
  2. Subject to the transitional arrangements set out in sub-paragraphs (c) to (f), the unsocial hours allowance shall be paid at an hourly rate of 10% of the member’s hourly rate of pay, calculated by multiplying by 6/125200 the member’s annual rate of pay.
  3. Until 1 January 2014 the unsocial hours allowance may be paid monthly in arrears at a fIxed rate in respect of any month in which the member works any hours between Spm and 6am, rather than by reference to the hours worked by the individual member.
  4. The fixed rate for a full-time member working a standard eight-hour alternating shift system for a four team pattern is as follows:
    1. £100 for constables;
    2. £125 for sergeants;
    3. £160 for inspectors;
    4. £175 for chief inspectors.
  5. The rates in sub-paragraph (d) may be altered by the chief offIcer where different shift arrangements apply.
  6. The fixed hourly rate for a part-time member shall be calculated by multiplying by 9/1565 the rate for the member’s rank in sub-paragraph (d), or such other rate as the chief offIcer has determined under sub-paragraph (e).
