PFEW Pay and Morale Survey: "Leicestershire Police has a determination to lift morale within force"
72% of Leicestershire Police officers who responded to the Police Federation of England and Wales Pay and Morale survey are dissatisfied with their pay – and nearly half (49%) said they have low morale.
67% of respondents from Leicestershire Police felt that they were worse off financially than they were five years ago and 9% of respondents reported never or almost never having enough money to cover all their essentials.
The majority (86%) of those who responded said they felt morale within the force is low or very low, a 3% drop from 2018. 49% said their own morale is low; 58% was recorded in 2018.
Leicestershire Police Federation Chairman Dave Stokes said there was a ‘real determination’ to lift morale on the force.
“As Leicestershire Police Federation we have analysed the pay and morale survey and what it shows is that pay and remuneration is intrinsically linked to officer morale. Accepting that yes, we have had a 2.5% pay rise for 2019, this does follow years and years of pay freezes and cuts for police officers.
“Pay and conditions are generally governed by the national Government and we will be feeding into the Police Federation of England and Wales to ensure that our members’ concerns are heard.
“Locally our force has a real determination to lift morale, listening to officer views and concerns.
“As an example, one of our Assistant Chief Constables has begun engagement with our frontline officers about carrying Taser. This approach makes officers feel valued, however it will also be overshadowed if officers feel they are not valued by the new Government.”
331 responses were received from Leicestershire Police, representing a response rate of around 18%.
Other results included 59% of respondents saying they would not recommend joining the police to others.
And 10% said they had an intention to leave the police service either within the next two years or as soon as possible.
