Neil and Emily:

“On the 18th June 2016 my life as I knew it stopped. Before then I was happy with life and had few concerns or worries. I had my beautiful, kind and caring wife Karen who was my best friend for over 20 years and our 11 year old daughter, Emily.

On the 14th June 2016 my wife was admitted to hospital at very short notice in order to undergo heart surgery. She had been born with congenital aortic value disease and from the age of 26 she had undergone 4 heart valve operations and 12 months before had survived a potentially fatal condition called endocarditis (bacteria in the blood). My wife was a strong, uncomplicated and brave woman who always put other people first.

On the 18th June 2016 she was pronounced dead.

Death is the only thing certain in life however it is the one thing we are never prepared for. I don’t intend to take you into a personal journey of our grief but I do wish to say thank you. When someone dies you are immediately faced with a mountain of forms and things you need to organise. Each and every form brings a wave of emotion. A simple form ended up being a step closer to the reality that she was never coming back.

Karen, Emily and I had booked a summer holiday in France before we were told about her operation. This holiday felt like a weight around my neck. Emotionally I wasn’t ready to take a holiday that we had planned as a family but I also couldn’t afford to lose such a large financial commitment.

Thankfully I remembered I had taken out the group insurance scheme offered by the Trust.The trusts helped me with the claim, legal advise and dealing with the underwriters. This was a simple process and the assistance and communication was much appreciated at a time of great stress. I was also very impressed by the extra support that was available. The Trusts also offered to make a contribution towards a holiday in the future for Emily and myself and the free use of the Trust’s cottage in the Cotswold as a way of making things easier for us both financially and emotionally.

I realised at this point that I hadn’t just signed up for an insurance policy to which you pay a monthly fee and are treated like cattle but in fact I was part owner of a trust which is set up to protect and support its members through difficult times.

So this letter is my way of saying thank you to the Trust and if shared a way of saying to officers out there that life will throw up challenges in their way and its best to be prepared to face them.”

We have managed to sort out all the planning permission for a lower floor extension to the house. We will now be able to give our son a bedroom downstairs with ,inked a wet room which will be accessible for wheelchairs.
