Meet The Kent Police Federation Reps – Matt Jones

Q. Can you give us a brief summary of your career history and your current rank and role?

A. I have been a frontline uniformed police officer for over 15 years. The past 4 predominantly as an Acting Sgt on LPT whereby I am awaiting the next promotional board. Those who know me and worked with me will understand how much I value and install morale every day which leads to motivation in such difficult times.

Q. What made you want to be a Fed Rep?
A. I am a strong minded individual with a lot of experience to offer to which I enjoy being there to assist others. Able to advise, and support when required when it feels like there really is no place to turn or ask for help. During my career I have been lucky to have some influential colleagues supporting me to which now I am in strong position to deliver that back. 

Q. Why do you think it’s important for members to be supported by fellow officers as their Reps?
A. Being a police officer in today’s climate is one of the hardest professions going. In saying that you become part of one of the most exclusive families possible. Colleagues fully know and understand the vast situations we face on a daily basis, so who better to support you?

Q. Which areas in particular are you looking forward to focusing on?
A. My aim is to specialise in conduct proceedings and health and safety. There to support officers in times of need.

Q. What should members do if they’re concerned about anything?
A. It has taken me many years to realise this but ASK! Talk to fellow colleagues, us, me. There is plenty of information on line now promoting the much valued work Fed Reps do. My mobile is on 24/7 I mean that!

Q. What would you say to colleagues who might wonder where their subs go?
A. Subs are ploughed back into assisting and supporting colleagues in times of need. Legal bills as we know can run into thousands and thousands these days. Other support for bereaved loved ones, which in my eyes is outstanding. I can honestly say the treasury of the Federation do an amazing job.
