“We are shocked, disgusted and in disbelief,” says the chair of Hertfordshire Police Federation Luke Mitchell, upon hearing that murderer James Hurley has been released from prison.
Hurley was convicted of the murder of off-duty Hertfordshire Police Officer Frank Mason during an armed robbery in Hemel Hempstead in 1988.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1989 but escaped while being transferred in 1994. He was on the run for 13 years and was found in 2007.
He has now been cleared for release by the parole board following a hearing last October.

Reflecting on the news, branch chair Luke said it was sickening: “We are shocked, disgusted and in disbelief to hear that Hurley has been released from prison.
“It is absolutely unpalatable, and I know this news will send shockwaves through all officers, not just Hertfordshire, but those up-and-down the country - both serving and retired.
“What Hurley did is unforgivable. This man murdered an off-duty police officer. What message does this send to the policing family? What message does this send to Frank’s family? This is the ultimate betrayal.
“This was a tragic, horrifying case, and for it to be even considered, let alone agreed, that Hurley is released from prison is an outrage.
"We must remember that not only was Hurley jailed for life for the murder of a police officer, but he then escaped from custody, only to be found by Dutch police during a suspected drug dealer raid in Holland. It makes a mockery of the whole system to hear such a person has been released from jail."
Hertfordshire Police continues to honour Frank by way of the Frank Mason Memorial Award, which is presented by the Force annually, to an officer who has displayed the qualities of dedication, professionalism and selflessness in protecting the community.
Luke ended: “As we digest this news, our thoughts are with the family of Frank, especially his wife, Jill. I’d like to take this opportunity to stress that Frank’s heroism, bravery and courage will never be forgotten.”
