Hertfordshire Police Federation

Premium private healthcare for police family

14 August 2024

Hertfordshire Police Federation has teamed up with the National Police Healthcare Scheme, a not-for-profit organisation that offers members the benefits of private healthcare.

Established in 1989, the National Police Healthcare Scheme is a self-financing scheme set up under a trust deed to provide private medical advice and treatment to subscribing members and their dependants.

Subscription costs start at just £16 per month (for officers aged 18 to 29) and membership of the scheme can be extended to a member’s spouse or partner, family and children.

Hertfordshire Police Federation members who sign up get the first three months free and the first year is free for student officers.

The scheme aims to cover the costs of hospitalisation and specialist medical fees, for treatment for acute medical conditions, both as an inpatient and outpatient.

It also covers the cost of outpatient physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic and acupuncture treatment up to £400 per course.

Officers who are members of the scheme also receive FREE Police Treatment Centre membership.

Benefits include:

  • Hospital charges, specialist fees, X-rays, scans etc, physiotherapy, osteopathy, acupuncture and chiropractic treatment*

Hertfordshire Police Federation chair Luke Mitchell said: “We’re pleased to be teaming up with the National Police Healthcare Scheme and to offer its benefits to members and their families.

“Policing is a unique job, we face unique challenges every day and we never know when we might need access to healthcare, medical assessment, or a diagnosis.

“We’re all aware of the pressures facing the NHS and often long waiting lists causing delays.

Private healthcare

“This scheme gives members the opportunity to have the benefits of private healthcare and therefore quicker access to treatment, should they need it.

“We would encourage members to take a closer look at what it has to offer, and we would particularly encourage student officers to sign up since their first year’s membership is free of charge.”

Following their 21st birthday, a child can remain in the scheme at the rate of £16.00, which will apply in the month following their 21st birthday. This applies until they reach 30, at which point their payments will increase in accordance with the current age-related subscriptions.
