Officers urged to take care in the heat

26 June 2024

Hertfordshire Police Federation chair Luke Mitchell is encouraging members to stay safe in the heat as temperatures head towards 30C.

Luke said it was vital that officers, particularly those on response and community policing, took breaks to cool down and stay hydrated.

His comments come as temperatures in the Force area are expected to reach 30C over the next two days.

The UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office issued a yellow heat health alert for most of England.

Vulnerable

The alert indicates that the heat could pose a risk to health, particularly those who are vulnerable.

Luke said: “This is the hottest period of the year so far and the heat poses problems for officers, particularly those on the frontline who are wearing black uniforms and carrying a lot of equipment.

“They can be at risk of heat stress, sunburn and dehydration, and we’re reminding them to look after themselves.

“Wear a cap, put on sunscreen, stay hydrated and, where possible, take breaks to cool down.”

Luke added: “We’d also ask the Force to ensure it is doing what it can to make sure working conditions are reasonable, comfortable, and safe for everyone.

Drinking water

“So that’s providing cool drinking water, fans or means of cooling the air, and perhaps adjusting shifts to avoid non-essential activities that are physically demanding or lead to prolonged exposure to the heat.”

Luke called for people to give officers support if they see them taking a break in public.

“Our members do a difficult job and need a break, like anyone else, particularly during hot spells,” he said.

“The vast majority of people understand the tough job they do and say ‘hi’ if they see them grabbing a drink or something during their shift, but there is a very small minority who think otherwise.

“We’re only human and need to look after ourselves so that we’re ready to respond when the next call comes in.”
