Branch elections are coming

11 January 2018

Elections for fed reps are scheduled to begin on 1 February.

Elections are held every three years but these forthcoming elections will be the first to take place using a new process following organisational reform recommended by our Independent Review.

The new process allows members to vote for their workplace reps, local chairs as well as the national chair via an electronic voting system which will be facilitated by the national members' database.  In addition, there will be no longer be separate rank committees at local or national level.

Information on the first round of elections for workplace reps, including how to nominate yourself and how to vote, is being sent directly to all reps and members via your PNN email addresses.

There is a wealth of expertise and much work being done by approximately 1,500 fed reps across England and Wales, each and every day, locally and nationally, representing approximately 120,000 officers (97% of all rank and file).

Why should I stand as a rep?

Becoming a workplace representative is a great way to develop your skills and take your career to new heights while also making a difference for your colleagues.

Any member from PC to chief inspector can nominate themselves and stand for election as a workplace rep, automatically becoming part of their local branch council – which can be a spring board to a regional or even a national role.

We are making a special plea to members from under-represented groups to consider putting themselves forward to become reps to help better reflect the diversity of our membership.

Nominations are open 1-17 February followed by voting in March.

What will be the structure of GMP Police Federation?

There will be a Federation branch council made up of all our workplace reps.  From the branch council, a branch board is elected, including a branch chair, secretary and treasurer.

The elections will not affect the services we provide as current reps will continue until the election process has finished.
