An award-winning Avon and Somerset Police officer has gone above and beyond in honour of an excellent cause.
Taunton’s Sgt Jon Gallagher is to enter a strongman competition in June and July to raise money for St Margaret’s hospice, which is supporting his wife Lorin who is battling a rare and incurable form of breast cancer.
Avon and Somerset Police Acting Chair Iain Prideaux said: “I first met Jon and his team at the Constabulary's Outstanding Policing Awards in Bristol. Taunton response team 2 were receiving special recognition for "Collective Excellence in Action" and Jon was one of the sergeants who led the team to confront a very dangerous male.
“The male was charged and jailed for two years. It was during the ceremony that I learnt about Jon's personal life and how poorly his wife is. I know how much Jon is loved and admired by his family and those he leads. This fundraising for St. Margaret's Hospice is typical of his can-do, positive attitude toward life. Well done on your training Jon and good luck with not one, but two strong man events.”
