Avon & Somerset Police Federation

Petition launched calling for #HarpersLaw

19 August 2020

We ask emergency services workers to keep the peace. To save lives. To protect us.

So society must offer the greatest protection for those killed protecting it.

That is what Harper’s Law will provide - an appropriate deterrent and a suitable punishment.

The campaign – by Lissie Harper, widow of hero PC Andrew Harper – will change the law and mean if a person is convicted of killing a police officer, firefighter, nurse, doctor, prison officer or paramedic they will face life behind bars.

Lissie said: “We’ve had so much support from everyone, from members of the public. I can’t tell you how many messages I’ve had from people saying, ‘yes, this needs to happen’. I’ve had a lot of messages saying, ‘what can we do, how can we help? We support Harper’s Law’.

“This is something that we want people to do, we want them to sign and share the petition as much as possible, just to show how much support there is for it and how many people want this.”

Avon and Somerset Police Federation Chair stated, “This is a tragic situation where we need to support Lissie and get a far better outcome for the families of officers who are killed on duty. Avon and Somerset Police Federation fully support this action and will lobby where appropriate to gather support for the required change in law and the protection of officers. The killing of a Police Officer has to be a national concern and should never be subject to such weak judicial outcome. For PC Harper, we need to push for this change and welcome your support in doing this.”
