3 September 2024
The National Board and National Council met today and agreed that notice should be served immediately to commence elections. The triennial election cycle would begin with workplace reps elections at the end of 2024.
The Federation had requested a change to our regulations which would increase the election cycle from three to five years. A case had been made to the Government for the change, which it was considering at the point that the general election was called. While a change might yet be approved in the future, we have decided to go ahead with elections under the existing rules and regs.
One of the arguments we had originally put forward in calling for a delay to new elections was the need for the Federation to make progress on agreeing a settlement in the Leigh Day case. I’m pleased that we are very close to finalising the terms of the settlement and so have a much clearer picture of our financial future. The Independent Review into the events which led to the Tribunal judgement is also on track to deliver ‘looking back’ findings this autumn. The progress we have made in these areas means that the organisation does have more time and space to organise and run elections.
The election timetable will be issued in the next few weeks together with further guidance on the process.
