Federation elections: rep nominations close tomorrow

23 January 2025

Members considering putting themselves forward to be workplace representatives in the Federation elections now have until tomorrow to submit their nominations.

The nomination period opened on 30 December and closes on Friday (24 January).

Members can then use an online portal to vote from 3 to 25 February with the results being announced on 27 February.

Earlier this week the national Federation hosted a virtual café event to allow members to find out more about what the role entails.

But Tim Rogers, secretary of West Midlands Police Federation, says there is still time for anyone considering becoming a rep to get more details about the election process and the work of a rep.

“I would really encourage any member with an interest in supporting colleagues to look at putting themselves forward as a workplace representative,” he explains.

Tim Rogers, secretary of West Midlands Police Federation.

“It can be incredibly rewarding to be able to help a colleague, perhaps by just giving them advice on Police Regulations or by supporting them through conduct processes.

“Of course, the role can bring its challenges, particularly given that a workplace rep carries out their Federation duties alongside their regular duties. But the training we give you as a rep is excellent, you will see matters from a different perspective and the experience will definitely enhance your policing experience. It is really satisfying to know that you have been able to offer support when a colleague is in need.

“Even if members decide not to put themselves forward as a rep, I would still encourage them to find out more about those who do stand in the elections and to vote when the time comes.

Members' voice

“It is vital that we have an effective Federation branch to give members a voice and represent their views. That means we need to have a team of proactive and committed reps so members need to vote for those who they feel will be best suited to the role.”

The nationwide Federation election process continues for most of this year with all stages being completed by 1 October 2025 when the new National Board will be in place.

Members vote for their workplace representatives and later will be able to select their choice of a local and national chair.

The Force’s constables, sergeants and inspecting ranks, as well as Specials, can stand in the local workplace representative elections, with successful candidates being given the opportunity to represent, support and negotiate on key issues for their colleagues.

Key information

Information on the first round of elections for workplace reps, including how to self-nominate and how to vote, have been emailed to all members.

Successful candidates will become part of the West Midlands Police Federation Branch Council. They can then stand to be on the local Branch Board, and from there a regional or a national role.

Federation branches across the country are making a special plea to members from under-represented groups to consider putting themselves forward to become reps to help better reflect the diversity of the membership.
