Tips to beat the January blues

20 January 2025

Today (Monday 20 January) is so-called Blue Monday, the third Monday of January which is said to be the most depressing day of the year.

While there is no scientific evidence to support Blue Monday, there is no doubt that with the excitement of Christmas in the distance, the long dark nights stretching on, and the cold weather, it can be a difficult period for some.

Inspector Karl Pierpoint, of the Men’s Health Group, has some tips for West Mercia Police Federation members to beat the January blues.

  • Exercise. Whatever you are into, whether it be playing a sport, running or cycling, or going for a short walk, try to get out in daylight hours and get what vitamin D you can. Vitamin D is crucial to us feeling better and sleeping better.
  • Set yourself small achievable goals rather than big new year resolutions. Look to start something new or do something more often such as to see friends or socialise.
  • Accept that we can all get a low feeling after the Christmas rush. You’re not alone, and it’s okay to have these feelings.
  • January bills and the expense of Christmas can be impactive. If finances are an issue, seek help now at the start of the year as a positive step. Having a plan and seeing the light is only ever a good thing and can give you a sense of control.
