West Mercia’s own ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’ completes London Marathon for children’s charity

10 May 2024

Tom Birchley, West Mercia Police Federation member, recently completed the gruelling 26.2-mile London Marathon, raising nearly £4,000 for Children with Cancer UK.

Despite facing an injury scare during the last few weeks of build-up, Police Officer Tom pushed through the pain to finish in a touch over four hours, propelled forward by the cheers and encouragement of the famous London Marathon crowds.

And as if completing 26.2 miles wasn’t enough, Tom ran the entire route dressed as Noel Gallagher alongside his brother Joe – or 'Liam' – with the pair serenading onlookers with their guitar and tambourine along the way.

The duo exceeded their fundraising target, a testament to the overwhelming support they received from friends, family and the community, not just on Marathon Sunday, but in the days, weeks and months leading up to it.

Tom said: “Every donation, no matter how big or small, has made a difference in the lives of children battling cancer.

“It's heartwarming to see so many people come together for such an important cause. The funds raised will go a long way in providing vital support and resources to children who really need it. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who fundraised, donated and cheered us on.

Talking after the race, Tom also thanked the 'unsung heroes' behind his marathon journey, particularly his wife, who provided unwavering support throughout his training and fundraising efforts.

“From putting up with my months of training to orchestrating fundraisers and cheering me on during the race, she's been the unsung hero of this journey. I couldn't have done it without her by my side every step of the way,” added Tom, who finished the route in four hours, two minutes.

To cap off a memorable weekend, Tom and his brother even managed to muster enough energy to hobble to Wembley in time to watch the FA Cup Semi-Final between Manchester United and Coventry City, which kicked off just 40 minutes after they crossed the finish line.
