West Mercia Police Federation

‘Thank you’ to Specials this International Volunteers Day

5 December 2024

West Mercia Police Federation chair Steve Butler has said ‘thank you’ to the Force’s Specials on International Volunteer Day.

Steve praised their ‘selflessness, dedication, and commitment’ in giving up their time to support West Mercia Police officers and to protect its communities.

He said: “The contribution that our volunteers make to policing in West Mercia is outstanding and they are an integral part of our work to protect the public and keep our communities safe.

“While International Volunteer Day gives us a chance to shine a light on their work, Specials are so much more than volunteers.

“It’s a unique role that gives back to the community, and their selflessness, dedication, and commitment really make a difference.

“Specials can learn new skills and take them back into their roles outside of policing.

“In turn, they bring their expertise and experience from their professional and personal lives, making the Force richer for their contribution."

Volunteered

According to PFEW, 6,118 Special Constables in England and Wales volunteered in the year ending March 31, 2024.

Steve said: “That’s an astonishing contribution to the police service and one police and the public are extremely grateful for. Thank you.”

A PFEW campaign to allow Specials to become Federation members successfully resulted in a change in the law.

It means that since July 2022, Specials have been entitled to membership and to receive support and advice from the Federation, including through misconduct proceedings and Post-Incident Procedures.

Specials

Steve said: “Specials operate alongside regular officers, and like regular officers there may come a time when they need support in the workplace.

“It’s only right and proper that the Federation is there to be able to offer that support in the same way we would for full-time officers. And I would encourage our members who are Specials to consider becoming reps.

“I want to ensure that we have as much representation as possible in our branch.”
