West Mercia Police Federation

Fed aware of potential pension calculation issues, members assured

30 January 2024

Members are being reassured that West Mercia Police Federation is working with the Force to address potential issues surrounding the calculation of pension lump sums, specifically regarding tax deductions.

Branch secretary Pete Nightingale’s comments come after it was brought to the Federation’s attention that the Force may not have followed National Police Chief Council Guidance to the detriment of officers.

Pete has also reaffirmed that the Federation is not responsible for the administration of the scheme, and all queries should be directed to the pension company XPS.

“We are aware that there may have been some issues with the way that West Mercia Police calculated pension lump sums specifically tax deductions. The force may not have followed National Police Chief Council Guidance to the detriment of officers,” said Pete.

“While West Mercia Police Federation is not responsible for the administration of the scheme, we do recognise that your pension is a valuable part of your overall remuneration package and you should get your full entitlement.

“Please be reassured that we will be working with the force to ensure that members are not adversely impacted. We are working with colleagues regionally and nationally and liaising with XPS to establish how far back any errors have been made.

“Whether or not you are retired or close to retirement, please do not contact the Federation directly on this issue at this time. I am reassured the force have immediately rectified this moving forward.”
