West Mercia Police Federation

Remembering PC Ricky Gray

6 May 2022

West Mercia Police Federation has paid tribute to a police officer who was shot dead as he raced to save two colleagues.

PC Richard Gray, who was known as Ricky, was killed while attending an early morning domestic disturbance at a house in Shrewsbury on 6 May 2007. He was 43.

PC Gray, a trained firearms officer and former soldier with five commendations for bravery, had rushed to the aid of two unarmed colleagues when he was shot by Peter Medlicott. Medlicott then turned the gun on himself.

PC Gray was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery.

West Mercia Police Federation chair Sarah Cooper said: “On the 15th anniversary of his death, we remember PC Ricky Gray, who was tragically shot and killed in the line of duty.

“It was an extraordinary act of courage and selflessness, to put the safety of others above his own.

“He acted in the very best traditions of policing and we will never forget his bravery, his heroism and his ultimate sacrifice.

“The thoughts of all of us at West Mercia Police Federation are with PC Gray’s family and friends. They too have suffered unimaginable sacrifice in service of the communities of West Mercia. I also want to acknowledge colleagues, who may still be serving officers, who live with the horror of this tragic incident every day.”
