West Mercia Police Federation chair Sarah Cooper has welcomed the fact that a campaign to honour police officers killed on duty with a posthumous medal is gathering momentum.

Sarah was reacting to the news that 26 Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) are the latest to back a campaign led by Bryn Hughes and Paul Bone, whose daughters PCs Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone were murdered in September 2012 while serving Greater Manchester Police.

The PCCs have added their names to a letter to Home Secretary Suella Braverman endorsing the idea of a police version of the Elizabeth Cross which is awarded to members of the British Armed Forces who are killed in action.

Sarah said: “An Elizabeth Medal for police officers killed in the line of duty seems to me to be a fitting legacy for HRH Queen Elizabeth II who exemplified public service during her 70-year reign, as well as honouring brave policemen and women who make the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of the public.”

West Mercia Police Federation has been delighted to support Bryn and Paul’s campaign, which is also backed by the Police Superintendents’ Association.

Sarah added: “I am really pleased that momentum is building for this campaign and hope that Ms Braverman will do all she can to offer her support.”
