West Mercia Police Federation

Remembering PC Ricky Gray

6 May 2021

West Mercia Police Federation chair Sarah Cooper has paid tribute to PC Richard Gray on the anniversary of his death in the line of duty.

PC Gray, known as Ricky to family and friends, was fatally shot on 6 May 2007 saving two colleagues who had been held at a house in Shrewsbury. He was 43.

He was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery for tackling the gunman.

Sarah said: “The anniversary of the death of PC Gray is always a poignant one, and our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.

“We’re reminded of the dangers of the job and the acts of courage often required in the line of duty, none more so than PC Gray who sacrificed his life to protect his colleagues and the public.

“It’s important that we remember his extraordinary bravery, and the bravery of our colleagues every day in keeping West Mercia safe.”
