The Police Federation of England and Wales’ Parliamentary Sub-Committee works on behalf of all 43 Federation branches to engage with legislators at Westminster and the Senedd in Cardiff.
The committee launched its #573 campaign in 2021, setting the ambitious goal for its committee and branches to meet all 573 English and Welsh MPs by the end of 2021, either virtually or face-to-face.
Nicky Ryan, the Federation's Welsh lead, has been heavily involved in this campaign and has been actively contacting Welsh politicians and arranging meetings to discuss officers’ concerns and topical issues.
The campaign seeks to encourage better engagement with MPs to bring policing issues and members’ concerns to the forefront of their thinking.
Meeting with MPs regularly not only allows them to be made aware of the issues impacting members at a local level but also offers an opportunity for them to briefed on national issues as well.
Many of the Federation’s campaign wins over the last few years, from legislative changes to sentencing for assaults on emergency workers to the introduction of a Police Covenant, started with conversations with MPs who have then advocated for these campaigns on the Federation’s behalf.
