Statement From Surrey Police Federation

27 April 2026

Statement from Surrey Police Federation regarding recent disorder in Epsom.

Surrey Police Federation Chair Darren Pemble said: “Over the past couple of weeks, we have seen disorder in Epsom town following the report of a rape in the town on Saturday 11 April.

“The speculation and commentary have led to public disorder during the protests. Officers have been deployed to deal with this disorder and protect the local community.

“Our members have had to endure verbal and physical abuse, have been subjected to violence and have had missiles thrown at them. Surrey Police will be dealing with this behaviour in a robust way, as this behaviour is unacceptable.

“Credit must go to the public order trained officers who have again been called into deal with the disorder, as well as the officers supporting the local community, providing them reassurance and responding to the many calls we receive daily.

“ACC Sarah Graeme has now confirmed that there was no offence of rape following a thorough investigation by the force. We thank our officers for the way they have conducted themselves during a challenging period and for their professionalism.

“It goes without saying that Surrey Police will take every report of sexual offending seriously and every allegation will be investigated in full. Investigations are complex and are not solved within 60 minutes as we see on TV. We need the public to be patient and trust us to uncover the facts.

“We approach a busy summer where officers will be required to work long hours to protect the public and we will continue to support them.

“We will be lobbying local MPs who we hope will be supportive of police officers receiving a fair pay rise evidencing the brave and exemplary work they do each and every day. Please support your police with the #CoppedEnough campaign and sign up to the virtual picket line.”
