Force agrees to increase in South East allowance for colleagues

Surrey Police has agreed to raise the South East Allowance by 3.5% - after the Federation called on the force to fund the full increase for their officers.

This will give officers an additional £105 more per year. Every little helps.

The Government announced on 16th July a 3.5% pay award for police officers, as well as allowing individual forces to increase their London Allowance or South East Allowance to a maximum of 3.5% in line with the pay increase.

Surrey Police Federation Chair Darren Pemble wrote to Chief Constable Tim De Meyer to ask that the force fully fund this increase and continue to pay the maximum permitted South East Allowance to Surrey officers, many of whom are struggling with the cost of living.

Darren said: “Surrey Police officers live in one of the most expensive areas of the country, and many are struggling to keep up with the cost of living. This can’t be right for the work they do in protecting our communities.

“We need to pay officers a fair wage for the challenging role they do. If police wages don’t keep pace with the private sector we will struggle to recruit talented people and retain the valuable experience and talent we already have in the force.

"I want to thank the force for continuing to pay the full South East Allowance, supporting their officers and recognising the difficulties they are facing.”

The pay and South East Allowance increases will come into force from 1st September.
