Suffolk Police Federation

Magazine pays tribute to Acting Detective Sergeant Matt Burgin-Powell

17 December 2025

In the final edition of Fed News - the magazine of Suffolk Police Federation - we pay tribute to Acting Detective Sergeant Matt Burgin-Powell.

A moving and emotional feature honours Matt’s life, shining a light on his journey into policing while celebrating who he was both professionally and personally.

Matt’s mum describes him as her ‘sunshine’, while his sister Connie calls him the ‘best brother’. We also hear from fellow Suffolk Police officer Luke Burgin-Powell, who speaks of the pride he felt for Matt - a man who continued to save lives even after his death through organ donation.

Elsewhere in the magazine, we catch up on this year’s Federation Conference, highlighting key moments from the two-day event for those who were unable to attend.

We also reflect on 2025, including this year’s poignant National Police Memorial Day, during which PC Cheryl Lloyd was among those remembered.

The magazine looks at the continued success of the wellbeing van and the growing number of officers taking advantage of the Group Insurance Scheme.

Rounding off this jam-packed edition is a feature on the Hudson family. We hear from branch secretary Ben Hudson, his brother and serving officer Will, and their father, retired Detective Chief Inspector Stuart. Policing truly runs in the family, as the trio share their unique journeys into the job.
