A statement from Suffolk Police Federation: officer cleared of gross misconduct

25 September 2025

Suffolk Police Federation welcomes the conclusion of a gross misconduct hearing, which has cleared PC Richard Edwards of all allegations of dishonesty and breaches of professional duty.

This matter should have been dealt with internally from the outset, without the need for a costly and protracted process. Instead, not only has the Force borne significant financial costs, but for more than two years, PC Edwards has been unable to serve and protect the people of Suffolk.

We must never lose sight of the fact that these processes have a serious impact on the wellbeing of the officers involved, as well as their loved ones, who have had to endure unnecessary stress and uncertainty.

This once again demonstrates the devastating toll such untimely IOPC investigations have on all those involved, including, in this case, the family of Mr Farmer. Of course, our thoughts remain with Mr Farmer’s loved ones, who no doubt have also felt the impact of this hearing, during what is already an extremely difficult and upsetting time.

It is vital that lessons are learned and that the IOPC is held accountable for the unnecessary harm it has caused. Officers deserve fair, timely, and proportionate processes - not years of uncertainty that damage lives, careers, and confidence in policing.

The Suffolk Police Federation has supported PC Edwards throughout the process and will continue to stand by officers to ensure they are treated fairly and with the respect they deserve as they carry out their duties to protect the public.
