Suffolk Police Federation

First ever Special to be solely nominated for Bravery Award

10 July 2024

Suffolk Police Federation is ‘extremely proud’ of history-making Kyle Scott, the first-ever Special Constable to be solely nominated for a national Police Bravery Award.

Kyle risked his life to rescue a vulnerable woman from the sea.

He waded into the sea in his full police kit, braving ice-cold water, and treacherous and windy conditions.

In temperatures of around -2C, Kyle dragged her out of the water off Felixstowe and then, with the help of members of the public, away from the sea to safety.

Nomination

His actions in March 2023 have earned him a nomination at the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) Police Bravery Awards.

Kyle’s nomination is the first for a Special since PFEW welcomed volunteer officers into its membership in July 2022.

Suffolk Police Federation secretary Ben Hudson said: “Kyle acted instinctively, showing incredible selflessness and bravery to rescue this woman from the freezing sea.

“There is no doubt that Kyle saved this woman’s life and he is thoroughly deserving of his nomination.

“But this is more than a nomination, Kyle has made history. While there have been Specials nominated as part of a team, Kyle is the first-ever Special to be nominated on his own, and this is something he should be incredibly proud of.

“Everyone here at Suffolk sends him the best of luck at this year’s awards.”

Selfless

Chief Constable Rachel Kearton also heaped praise on Kyle for demonstrating the selfless dedication Specials demonstrate on a daily basis.

“I remember during my infancy as an officer, I quickly realised that there are people out there who put on a uniform and dedicate their spare time to protecting the public - and they do it for free, out of the kindness of their heart,” said Rachel.

“Kyle is a shining example of that, and his actions have demonstrated how Specials put their lives at risk every day, just as regular officers do.

“I don’t think their actions are appreciated enough by members of the public and I hope this nomination highlights just how much of a vital role Specials play in policing.”

The annual National Police Bravery Awards are organised by the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW), with this year’s ceremony taking place on 11 July in London.

Kyle will be joined by his brother Ashley at the ceremony, Ben will be representing Suffolk Police Federation, while Deputy Chief Constable Rob Jones is set to attend on behalf of the Force.
