Suffolk Police Federation

Fed chair reflects on ‘touching’ Emergency Services Carol Concert

13 December 2024

Darren was joined by a number of serving and retired police officers and emergency service workers from further afield at St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds on Monday (9 December).

The service is held around Christmas each year to recognise the many parts played across the region in responding to emergencies, with invitations this year extended to all organisations linked to the Suffolk Resilience Forum.

Branch chair Darren Harris attends the carol service along with CFO of Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service Jon Lacey, and Associate Director of East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust Jo Fletcher.

Other notable attendees included Suffolk Constabulary’s Assistant Chief Constable Eamonn Bridger, CFO of Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service Jon Lacey, and Associate Director of East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust Jo Fletcher.

Speaking after the service, Darren said: “I was honoured to attend such a wonderful event on behalf of the Federation. It was a touching evening to be proud of for all involved.

“Nothing gets you in the festive spirit better than a Christmas carol service, and it was also great to see the three main strands of the emergency services well represented.

Christmas

“Of course, there’s no such thing as a ‘normal Christmas’ for many working in the emergency services. This event, in some way, was a demonstration of appreciation for those in policing, the fire and rescue service and the NHS - as well as their loved ones - who continue to sacrifice quality time to serve the public over the Christmas period.

“I think it’s extremely important to take the time out to reflect on all the good we do and connect with the communities we serve in a bit of different way – and that’s exactly what this concert allowed us to do.”

Guests at the Cathedral were treated to both traditional carol music and contemporary performances from the likes of the Suffolk Rock Choir, as well as poignant readings from a range of speakers.

Mince pie

Following this formal part of the service, proceedings were rounded off with a chance to socialise over mince pies and drinks.

“For me, it was the sort of event that reminds me how proud I am to represent both the Federation and our policing family,” continued Darren.
