Suffolk Police Federation chair Darren Harris has sent a good luck message to national Police Bravery Award nominees Craig Cullen and Ryan Butters ahead of the ceremony.
The PCs were put forward for the prestigious award after tackling a man who had threatened betting shop staff and members of the public with what appeared to be a handgun.
The offender brandished the weapon in the face of the cashiers, asking “if they wished to die”, as he unsuccessfully demanded they give him money from tills.
Having left the bookmakers, he reportedly threatened a member of the public, holding the “firearm” to her head and demanding money and a cigarette.
Shortly after, the two officers found him waving what appeared to be a silver revolver around, in the middle of Sudbury town.
Although the weapon turned out to be an imitation, the officers did not know that when they tackled and arrested him.
Darren said: “This is another example of police officers running towards danger and putting themselves in harm’s way to ensure the safety of others.
“Craig and Ryan kept cool heads and showed tremendous courage to tackle this offender and are fully deserving of this nomination.
“We wish them all the very best of luck at the awards ceremony and hope they have a great day in London.”
The Police Bravery Awards, which are organised each year by the Police Federation of England and Wales, will be taking place in the capital tomorrow (13 July).
