Fed prepares to honour fallen officers at National Police Memorial Day

24 August 2023

Suffolk Police Federation representatives will be joining colleagues from across the UK at next month’s National Police Memorial Day service of remembrance.
This year’s service is being held in Cardiff where officers killed in the line of duty will be honoured for their courage and sacrifice.
Suffolk Police Federation chair Darren Harris said it was important to remember fallen colleagues and show support to the families of those left behind.
He said: “The memorial service is always a very dignified and sensitive act of remembrance and reflection and is a key date on the policing calendar.

“Police officers are keenly aware of the dangers they and their colleagues can face on a daily basis and National Police Memorial Day gives us the chance to pay tribute to those colleagues who have given their lives in the line of duty.”

The first National Police Memorial Day took place in 2004 and it is supported by royalty, the Government and all UK police services.

It is rotated around the four nations of the United Kingdom and is held on the closest Sunday to 29 September, which is St Michael’s Day, the patron saint of policing.

This year’s service is being held at St David’s Hall in Cardiff on Sunday 24 September. It starts at 2pm and attendees are asked to be seated no later than 1.30pm.

A tribute wall is planned for people to share their messages of remembrance and support, as in previous years.

Register to attend the service.
