Alex Duncan has been selected as the national secretary of the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW).
His appointment follows a new interview process.
Tiff Lynch, chair of Leicestershire Police Federation and newly-elected member of the PFEW National Board, has congratulated Alex and other new national post-holders on their new roles.
“After our internal reform programme and a series of elections, locally and nationally, we are now in a very strong position to get down to business, effectively represent our members and ensure that we take the Federation forward,” says Tiff.
“I am looking forward to working with Alex, new national chair John Apter and the rest of the National Board to ensure that officers’ welfare, safety and security are put to the fore by the Government. Officers lay their lives on the line to protect their communities and we must ensure they are treated fairly in terms of their pay and their conditions of service.
“They must also be provided with the best equipment to do their jobs and to protect them and the public. As a Federation, we must ensure that happens.”
Alex takes over his new role on 1 October following the retirement of Andy Fittes who has been an officer for 31 years, 19 of which as a Federation rep and four as national secretary.
The national secretary has overall responsibility for the day-to-day management of PFEW, staff, departments and representatives. They also contribute to setting and supporting the implementation of the Federation’s strategic direction, and leads on pay negotiations with the Government.
Alex, an Avon and Somerset officer, has 27 years’ service, has been a Fed rep for 19 years and took up a role on the National Board in 2014.
