GMP Federation Statement on plans for 50 Direct Entry Detective

1 February 2019

Chairman Stu Berry reacts to the news that there will be a slight increase in police officers.... but also raises concerns about plans for direct entry detectives.

Stu said: “This slight increase in officer numbers announced today by the Force is good news and a step in the right direction to assist our overstretched workforce.

“However, the decision to introduce direct entry detectives leaves me with a sense foreboding.

“How will those officers attain the basic understanding and experience required of a competent Police Officer?

“The probationary period of traditional front line policing provides a strong foundation and is a cornerstone of the British Police Service.

“How will those officers be integrated into front line policing if their career path changes laterally or progresses via promotion?

“These officers could be left vulnerable without the skills and abilities required to discharge their responsibilities.

“The repercussions of this decision could significantly diminish the quality of our investigative ability and the service we provide to the public.

“Clearly there needs to be a period of consultation to resolve these issues prior to the implementation of this initiative within GMP.”
