Officers under incredible pressure due to demand 'perfect storm'

13 July 2018

GMP Federation Chairman: There are no extra police officers to cope with this demand

Stu Berry, Chairman of Greater Manchester Police Federation, has outlined the incredible level of work police officers are enduring – and how there are far fewer of them to cope.

Stu said: “The recent hot weather, England’s run in the football World Cup and the visit of President Trump have created the perfect storm regarding the demand placed on police officers.

“However, the public are still being kept safe by our police officers – but what they need to understand is that these officers are working extended hours and that these are officers already burnt out from the demands placed on them having their rest days cancelled in order to protect the public.

“They are working more hours, having days off cancelled. They are being dragged from other areas.

“Put simply, we don’t have enough officers to cope with these demands, this is what the Government, Mayors and councillors need to realise that we urgently need support.”

And Stu has also made comment on the disgraceful state of accommodation some officers are facing whilst policing the Trump visit.

He added: “I’ve seen the pictures of the accommodation being offered by Essex Police to officers, including GMP officers, who will be policing the visit of President Trump.

“It beggars belief that the Essex Chief officer team thought they would be acceptable.

“A team of officers including a GMP Federation Representative are travelling to the site to working with their Essex colleagues and resolve the situation.

“I’ve also spoken to the Deputy Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police who has liaised with Chief Officers within Essex Police to try and resolve this for GMP officers and others who will be policing the visit.”
