Dyfed Powys Police Federation has welcomed the recognition of members’ efforts following the latest inspection by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS).
The Force was assessed across nine areas of policing with it being found as Good in four areas, Adequate in four areas and Requires Improvement in one area.
Branch chair Delme Rees said he was pleased to see the report highlight improvements in five key areas that had been assessed as requiring improvement or adequate during the last inspection.
Those areas are:
Attracting, developing and retaining the workforce and creating a diverse and inclusive workplace which has gone from Requires Improvement to Good.
Using powers fairly, appropriately and with justification which has gone from Adequate to Good.
Preventing and deterring crime and antisocial behaviour and reducing vulnerability has improved from Adequate to Good.
Responding to the public has also improved from Adequate to Good.
Safeguarding children and adults at risk of harm has gone from Requires Improvement to Adequate.
Delme said: “It’s good to see the collective efforts of everyone involved being recognised by the positive findings in this report.
“Over recent months, some of our members have had to adapt to new working patterns, take on additional responsibilities or move into entirely different roles as the Force balances competing demands and works to improve its service to the public.
“It’s important that these changes were managed in a way that supports our members and minimises any adverse impact on them.
“The Branch has been involved throughout, helping to maintain communication between members and the Force and ensuring feedback is heard.
“We will continue to work constructively with the Force as it moves forward.”
The four areas assessed as Good were:
Attracting, developing and retaining the workforce and creating a diverse and inclusive workplace
Using powers fairly, appropriately and with justification
Preventing and deterring crime and antisocial behaviour, and reducing vulnerability
Responding to the public
The four areas assessed as Adequate were:
Leadership and force management
Safeguarding children and adults at risk of harm
Managing fraud
Providing a safe and lawful custody environment
The area assessed as Requires Improvement was:
Investigating crime
HMICFRS also confirmed that 26 areas for improvement identified during the previous inspection had been discharged.
This means the Force has provided enough evidence to satisfy the inspectors the force has sustained improvements.
There are four remaining areas for improvement pending review.
Delme said: “We will continue to work constructively with the Force as it moves forward and addresses the report and its findings and ensure that members’ voices are heard.”
Chief Constable Ifan Charles said: “We welcome the findings of this independent inspection and the opportunity it provides to understand what we are doing well and where we need to continue to improve.
“I am particularly pleased our work has been assessed as good in four important areas of policing.
“This reflects the commitment and professionalism of officers, staff, volunteers and partners who work every day to provide a high-quality service to the communities we serve.”
