Bravery Awards nominee ‘humbled’ by colleagues’ ‘incredible stories’ of courage

Dyfed Powys Police’s nominee for the Police Bravery Awards said hearing colleagues’ stories of courage during a Downing Street reception made him proud to be an officer.

PC Spencer Rourke joined nominees from across England and Wales at a special event in the gardens of 10 Downing Street.

And he said it was ‘humbling’ to hear their stories.

Spencer, whose son Jacob, attended the reception with him, said: “It was nice to meet colleagues from other forces and speak to them about what they’ve been through.

“There are some incredible stories of how officers have helped members of the public, whether that be saving them when they’re in distress or tackling people who are set to do harm.

“It makes you proud to be part of the police family.”

Spencer said it was ‘an honour’ to represent the Force at the reception, which was hosted by home secretary Shabana Mahmood.

He said: “We had a lovely reception in the Downing Street garden.

“It was great to see inside Downing Street, but I haven’t seen Larry the cat, unfortunately.

“It’s lovely to see some of the history inside and to meet the home secretary and the policing minister, and to be part of it with all these other officers who have done great things for the public.”

Spencer was nominated after carrying out a courageous late-night sea rescue in Milford Haven at around 12.30am on 24 May 2025.

Spencer drew on his previous experience as a lifeguard and kayak instructor to rescue the woman, who was around 100m out to sea.

He said: “I am greatly honoured to represent the Force and surprised to have that honour.

“There isn’t an officer that doesn’t deserve to be here today for their acts of bravery, and I am grateful for the opportunity.”
