New faces set for local derby as Dyfed Powys prepare for South Wales rugby test

12 November 2025

The secretary of Dyfed Powys Police Men’s Rugby Club says the squad head into the derby fixture with South Wales with a mix of anticipation and realism.

Sergeant Darren Morgan said he is excited to see how a number of new players will fare against the defending Police Sports UK (PSUK) Cup winners.

But he said the squad has been stretched by an unusually high number of unavailable players, with around 30 players absent through work demands, personal commitments, and injuries.

Darren said: “It’s been a bit of a challenge with the number of boys unavailable.

“It’s a shame we won’t be nearer to a full squad because we’ve recruited well and have some exciting new players coming in.

“But this is a great chance to see what they can do.”

The new players are set to include former Scarlets and Leicester Tigers lock Tom Price, and front-rower Will Morris and scrum-half Kyffin Morgan, who have represented RGC North Wales. Wing Gary Cole, who has spent recent years concentrating on competitive judo, returns to offer cover on the bench.

Dyfed Powys Police have reached the semi-finals of the PSUK Cup in each of the last two seasons.

They will arrive at the derby on the back of a thrilling 43-40 win over the Metropolitan Police at Furnace United RFC.

Derby fixture

Darren said: “It was a crazy game and absolutely terrible conditions.

“We kicked a penalty three minutes before the end which effectively won us the game.

“The support was brilliant, considering the conditions, and really helped.”

The derby fixture kicks off at 7pm on Wednesday at Aberdare RFC, and the contest is again expected to be shaped by wet and windy weather.

Darren said: “With the forecast, I expect it will be very much forward driven.

“Whatever the result, the boys will give everything. It’s a big opportunity for the new lads and we’re proud to represent the force.”
