Dyfed Powys Police Federation

Life saving officer wished luck ahead of national Bravery Awards

7 July 2025

Branch chair Delme Rees has wished good luck to PC Jonathan Tatam as he prepares to attend the 2025 national Police Bravery Awards later this week.

The prestigious awards ceremony will take place in London on Thursday (10 July) in a celebration of the extraordinary courage displayed by officers from across England and Wales.

Jonathan will represent Dyfed Powys Police after being nominated for his outstanding actions at the scene of a serious road traffic collision near Carmarthen last August.

PC Jonathan Tatam.

Responding to a head-on crash involving three vehicles on a single-lane road, the 33-year-old arrived to find one driver trapped inside a burning car – unable to free his leg as fire spread rapidly from the dashboard.

With time running out, Jonathan’s quick thinking saw him retrieve a fire extinguisher from his Force vehicle and return to tackle the blaze, creating enough of a window for the victim to free himself and escape. The car was fully engulfed in flames just seconds later.

Despite the extreme danger, Jonathan remained to help administer first aid to the victim, who was eventually airlifted to hospital. Here, he was treated for multiple life-saving injuries - including a broken femur and third-degree burns requiring skin grafts – which he continues to recover from.

Delme said: “Once again, I would like to congratulate Jonathan on his nomination and give him my best wishes for the Bravery Awards ceremony.

“His response in this critical situation last summer was nothing short of exceptional – when all his instincts would have been telling him to run away from danger, he went towards it and put himself in harm’s way.

“An explosion at any second could have caused devastating consequences, but Jonathan’s commitment to the victim never wavered as he remained by his side until the last possible moment. I think this is what true bravery looks like.

“I want to say how proud we all are of Jonathan, and I hope he enjoys himself at the event."
