Financial pledge set to bring new police memorial a step closer

Dyfed Powys Police Federation chair Delme Rees hopes a financial pledge by Metfriendly will help to bring a National Welsh Police Memorial one step closer.

The Police Remembrance Trust has been working on a memorial – which will be located in Alexandra Gardens in Cardiff – for a number of years

Now Metfriendly, which offers flexible, tailored financial solutions for the police family, has pledged £5,000 towards establishing the memorial. The donation will be made when 1,000 Welsh members join.

Delme said: “This is a welcome gesture by Metfriendly, which hopefully will bring the National Welsh Police Memorial another step closer.

“At the moment, Wales is the only country in the UK without its own dedicated police memorial.

“It’s important that we have one to remember those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

“It will provide a place for families, friends, colleagues and the public in general to pay their respects to officers who have died on duty while protecting our communities.

“They must never be forgotten.”

Metfriendly’s pledge will begin on St David’s Day and last throughout March.

A spokesperson said: “This initiative is more than just a financial pledge, it’s a heartfelt commitment to remembering the bravery and dedication of Welsh police officers.

Officers in their first three years of service can enrol in Metfriendly’s critical illness cover – free for 12 months. It is usually only available in the first 12 months of service. Officers will also be entered into a prize draw to win one of three £50 Amazon.co.uk gift cards.

Other Metfriendly products including ISAs, protection plans, and its popular ten-year savings plan, are available to serving, former or retired police officers and immediate family members, as well as their partners.
