Ahead of the Bravery Awards ceremony this evening (Thursday 10 July), PC Jonathan Tatam spent some time with Yvette Cooper, who congratulated him on his achievement.
Jonathan’s nomination came after his exceptional work at the scene of a serious road traffic collision last summer, where he rescued a man whose leg was trapped inside a burning car.

Following the reception, he said: “It was a great experience to receive praise and recognition from the Home Secretary. She was grateful not just for the specific incidents of bravery, but for our service as police officers in general too, which I thought was a nice touch.
“It was a good feeling to hear those words from an important figure in policing, and although it’s not why we do the job, it’s the sort of thing that can still go a very long way.
“After the formalities were done, it was all topped off with a tour of Downing Street, and that was brilliant too. It was just nice to feel that appreciation with such a lovely morning and afternoon."
The officer went on to discuss the honour of attending the reception alongside his fellow nominees, adding: “To be in the company of other officers who have done exceptional things was a real privilege. I spoke to a few of them about their own nominations and it was nice to be reminded of how many good people there are in our profession.
“I’m really looking forward to celebrating with everyone tonight at the ceremony. For me, it doesn’t matter who wins – I just want to have an enjoyable evening alongside my peers from across both Wales and England.”
Jonathan was also joined at the reception by his mum, Rosanne, who he said was enjoying herself just as much as he was.
“I think it was a bit of an eye-opener for her too – it was the first kind of experience like that for us both, so we were loving every minute," he continued.
“The fact that she is able to be with me here today is another lovely part of all this. I know she’s very proud of me, and I’m just glad she is able to have this Bravery Awards experience too.”
Branch chair Delme Rees echoed these sentiments, saying: “The best thing is that it’s such a proud day all-round – not just for the officer, but for their loved ones as well.
“We couldn’t be prouder of our 2025 nominee, Jonathan. The courage and commitment he displayed on that day last August was unbelievable, so he absolutely deserves to enjoy himself in London today.
“Once again, I would like to wish him all the best for tonight’s ceremony, where I’m sure he’ll have a fantastic time being celebrated for the outstanding officer he is.”
