Dyfed Powys Police Federation

International Volunteers Day: Fed chair sings praises of Specials

5 December 2024

Special Constables are voluntary officers who dedicate at least 16 hours of their time to the police each month, contributing to the likes of response, roads and public order policing.

In a variety of other ways, they also lend skills and knowledge developed from their day jobs and lives outside of the force.

A new Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act allowed Specials to become members of the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) from July 2022.

Before this point, the Special Constabulary had no overarching representation from a staff association, despite being formed back in 1831.

Delme says this was undoubtedly a change for the better: “We are very proud to be able to say we have Specials within our Federation membership nowadays.

Specials

“These are people who work incredibly hard, expose themselves to danger and criticism and don’t ask for any money in return. They are exactly what policing needs and a perfect complement to regular officers.

“I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Specials for all that they do and my excitement for the times ahead as we look out for them as Fed members.”

Special Constables interested in joining the Fed can discuss membership by contacting them here, before filling out an application form.
