PS Stokeld & PC Mills
Heroic Rescue Attempt
The above officers are being recognised at the forthcoming Cleveland Police Federation Bravery Awards 21st March 24.
On 29th March 2022 these officers were on routine patrol. Their attention has been drawn to a vehicle travelling at high speed. The officers have attempted to stop the vehicle, but it has failed to stop for them. The vehicle has shown complete disregard for other members of the public in order to evade Police. The vehicle then collided with a member of the public’s vehicle.
The officers arrived at the scene of the collision and immediately began to deal with the horrific scene in front of them. They began to give immediate first aid to all persons involved. The subject vehicle caught fire and began to burn in the engine block area. Whilst PS Stokeld tried to fight this fire, PC Mills entered the vehicle to attend to the driver. Despite his best efforts he was unable to free the driver, as he was trapped by the steering column and was also unresponsive. The fire service had now arrived and began to fight the fire.
Both officers then went across to the other vehicle, which was still on its side. With the help of the Fire service, they put the vehicle back onto its wheels so paramedics, who had also arrived, could attend to the driver of this vehicle. Sadly, all attempts to save this driver were unsuccessful.
