City of London Police Federation

Introducing the new Secretary of The City of London Police Federation: Andy Wilde

6 October 2026

Tell us a bit about your policing career?

I joined The City of London Police in 2006 and was posted to A group, B division at Snow Hill. In 2008 I then moved across to Bishopsgate when the two divisions merged. I remained on A group until I was promoted to Sgt in 2012, which led to a move to B group as a Response Sgt and Custody Sgt. In 2016 I undertook an ARV course and joined the TFG the following year following a short period on D group response. I remained there until a back injury put an end to my firearms career and I then worked hard to get fit enough to return to operational duties, whilst also completing my Inspector exams. The support I had through a stay at Flint House was pivotal to my recovery and I was posted to E group as a response Sgt in 2022 before moving back to A group on temporary promotion later that year followed by substantive promotion in 2024. This was my last posting as the A Group Inspector prior to moving to my new Federation Secretary role.

When and why did you join the Federation?

I became a workplace representative in 2020 as a result of supporting a number of officers involved in high-profile incidents. As a line manager and Welfare Officer, I saw first-hand the support the Federation could provide to officers involved in post-incident procedures. I was extremely grateful of the assistance that the fed reps were able to afford and wanted to be further involved in supporting officers during such incidents.

How does it feel to be appointed Branch Secretary?

It’s an immense privilege to be appointed Branch Secretary and have the opportunity to build on the strong foundations Suzanne Ferris has established in both branch governance and member support. I’m grateful for the trust that has been placed in me by our branch board and am keen to deliver for the membership.

What are your immediate priorities?

My immediate priorities build on the four areas the branch has focused on over the past year:

  • Pay and Conditions
  • Workforce planning
  • Conduct Investigations
  • Welfare

That means going above and beyond for officers, treating the regulations as the baseline rather than the ceiling for the support the force provides. We will continue to support the Copped Enough campaign and engage with COT next year ahead of the next NPCC submission.

With police reform on the horizon, I want to support a one-force approach, break down silos and ensure parity across the organisation. The City of London Police is a unique force with a proud history and a wide range of specialisms, and we must make sure that every officer feels equally supported, valued and represented.

I’ll be working alongside our PSD management to ensure timely and proportionate investigations with early reassessments where appropriate and getting the force in a good position to respond to recommendations that may come out of the Accountability Review when this reports next year.

We have seen significant progress in the governance of Welfare Support Officers, and I am keen to work with the newly appointed strategic and tactical leads to build on that progress. Whilst welfare is the responsibility of the force one of my main priorities is around formalising the welfare fund from the £1 monthly admin fee added to the group insurance scheme fees and get this money used for the benefit of members.

Why is the Federation so important?

There are additional responsibilities and restrictions placed on officers by virtue of our office and significant public scrutiny. As such the Police Federation is an important voice for our members. The Federation plays a key role in negotiating and influencing the strategic direction of force and policing nationally. On a local level, it is also a great source of support to individual officers facing wide range of issues, whether this be in relation to conduct matters, performance, post incident, equality issues, pensions or just basic queries around what they are entitled to.

Do you have a message for the members as Secretary?

Please make use of your branch and the team of workplace reps we have across the force. Feel free to pop by our office on 5th floor at Bishopsgate or you can email into the office on city@polfed.org and we can make arrangements for you to be contacted by a rep. Your Federation is here for you and we have a team of motivated, trained and capable reps able to help and support you.
