The City Of London Police Federation Chair, Mike Reed, has announced his intention to stand down from his post and retire at the end of November - after 13 years in the role.
So that there can be a period of handover, the process for electing a Chair Elect will start today (9 September); the successful candidate will take up their position next month and become full Federation Chair on 1 December.
Mike said: "It’s been a complete honour to have been trusted by officers to represent them internally and externally. The role of Federation Chair is an unusual one and not one I planned to do, but it was probably a natural progression from my leadership style as a supervisor.
"I’ve always hated unfairness and have long been an advocate for those who needed help.
“The role has had some fantastic moments where I’ve been able to make the working conditions better for our officers and celebrate their achievements, but I have also shared some very deep lows with some of those officers.
“It is rewarding when you see them at the other end, but at times it can be emotionally draining, when you can’t help but feel affinity with them, while also dealing with the demands and expectations placed on you.
“It’s now the right time for me to step down and allow for the planning and election of a Chair Elect to take over and help Suzanne, our Branch Secretary, deliver ongoing support to our officers.
“I wish whoever the incoming Chair is the very best of luck for a role that has many challenges and diverse responsibilities, but is like no other within force.
“If I was to offer any advice it would be to insist on fairness to achieve positive outcomes for officers. You will never please everyone, but fairness is non-negotiable!”
The timetable for electing a new Chair is as follows:
Nominations: Tuesday 9 September - Friday 19 September
Nomination is open to members of the Branch Board only
Voting: Wednesday 24 September - Wednesday 8 October
If the election is contested, every member of the Branch will be able to vote
Results announced: Thursday 9 October
The successful candidate will become Chair Elect
Incumbent Chair retires: Friday 28 November
New Chair takes office: Monday 1 December
