Fallen colleagues to be remembered at National Police Memorial Day

Derbyshire Police Federation will join branches from across the four nations in remembering fallen colleagues at the National Police Memorial Day (NPMD).

There’s a month to go until this year’s service at St David’s Hall in Cardiff on Sunday 24 September.

Branch chair Tony Wetton will be representing Derbyshire Police Federation.

Tony said: “The National Police Memorial Day is one of the most significant days of the year for policing.

“When an officer falls, it really does affect everyone in the police family.

“NPMD is a chance for colleagues from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to all come together to reflect, to remember and to pay our respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

“It’s also a chance for us to show our support for their families and their loved ones.

“The day and the service shows the policing family at its finest,” he added.

As in previous years, a tribute wall is planned for people to share their messages of remembrance and support.

The National Police Memorial Day was first held in 2004 and is supported by royalty, government and UK police services.

It is rotated around the four nations of the United Kingdom and is held on the closest Sunday to 29 September, which is St Michael’s Day, the patron saint of policing.

It provides a dignified and sensitive service of remembrance to honour the courage and sacrifice of the almost 4,000 police officers who have been killed on duty.
