The Police Federation of England & Wales (PFEW) has appointed Charlie Hall QPM as a strategic advisor. He is currently Chief Constable for Hertfordshire Constabulary and will take up this new role after he has retired from the police service at the end of this month.

Charlie will have completed more than 32 years’ police service upon retirement. He joined Hertfordshire in October 2016 on promotion as Chief Constable and in 2017 he was awarded the Queen's Policing Medal in the New Year Honours List. He will join PFEW as a Strategic Advisor to the Chief Executive Officer, Mukund Krishna, starting in January 2025. His brief will be to assist in building relationships and connections within senior ranks across England and Wales and to advise on major policing issues. Charlie will also provide advice on issues surrounding the Policing Code of Conduct and PFEW standards.

Mukund Krishna said: “Charlie Hall has had a distinguished career in policing, serving nearly half his career as a chief officer and for the last eight as a Chief Constable. His experience and knowledge will allow the Federation to play an even more important role in the future of policing – which will have a direct benefit to the Federation’s more than 145,000 members.”

Charlie Hall QPM said: “I look forward to working with the PFEW to advise them in their important role. I hope that I can use my previous experience to support in a way that will bring benefits to their members, the police service as a whole and the public alike.”

Hertfordshire Police Federation Chair Luke Mitchell said: “Charlie is the longest serving Chief Constable in the country and has navigated the last eight years as Chief of Hertfordshire. He understands first-hand the pressure our members are under. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to attract someone of Charlie’s experience and background to support PFEW.”

Charlie started his career with Norfolk Constabulary, working initially in Norwich and then across the county more widely. He served in many roles across all ranks up to and including Deputy Chief Constable. Nationally, Charlie chaired the Operations Co-ordination Committee for the National Police Chiefs’ Council and was the NPCC lead on Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). He was also the senior responsible officer for the JESIP programme, which focuses on improving the joint working between the police, fire and ambulance services, and other first responders when deployed to operational incidents.
